My Fincher File

Thanks to everyone who has voted so far in the David Fincher Directors Poll. It's still going strong and I will keep it running through part of next week. I have had a few folks ask me what my favorite Fincher films are, so I thought I would throw out a quick list. Since he is one of my favorite modern directors I find something of value in all of his films, even in the couple that I thought were disappointing. A couple of quick notes...I have only seen The Game once and my opinion of it might be much higher now, also I much prefer Fincher's much maligned Alien 3 over Cameron's Aliens, a work that I always felt diminished the great horrific impact of the original. Finally, weak final portion aside, I will always really dig Panic Room. So here's my list of favorites from Finch in order:

Images From My All Time Favorite Films: Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange (1971)

I must say that attempting to capture images from a film as iconic and famous as Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange was an extremely hard thing to do. I wanted to try and capture some shots from the film that haven't become a part of our cultural landscape, as so many moments from the film have. On the other hand I didn't want to betray one of my favorite films by not highlighting some of the most powerful moments...like I said, tricky but I hope these came out okay and yes I am cheating a bit as I am going with eleven shots here instead of my customary ten. I am actually thinking about having a separate post of the pictures I captured that I am not using here, as a sort of 'outtakes post' if you will.

One other thing. I was initially planning on paying tribute to one of my favorite David Fincher films to go along with this weeks poll, but at the last minute I decided to hold off on that as it seemed a bit predictable. While I was capturing these stills from Clockwork though, I realized the meticulous Fincher has some things in common with Kubrick, one of cinema's great past perfectionists. Also, it struck me that there are clear correlations between A Clockwork Orange and Fight Club, especially in the reception that greeted and has stuck with both of them. While perhaps the most controversial films of Kubricks and Finchers careers have little in common as movies, they both strike a chord in their fans and critics few other films can touch. Here are two films that since there releases have been labeled as everything from groundbreaking masterpieces to near fascist pornography. They are also two films that don't typically inspire casual reactions from people, as both A Clockwork Orange and Fight Club really define the 'love them or hate them' category. Maybe the greatest connection between the two works is that they survive and, love them or loath them, both films will continue to be written and argued about long after we all are gone.
