This is probably the most intriguing and thought-provoking juxtaposition you've come up with in the "Closing Shots" series.

I've not seen 'The Ninth Configuration' in years, but remember being challenging, bemused and blown away by it in roughly equal measures.

I saw 'Breaking the Waves' when it first came out, at Nottingham's Broadway cinema, and I felt myself becoming almost physically depressed during the last 40 minutes or so. And then, out of nowhere, von Triers conjured that inspired metaphysical ending, a stroke of cinematic legerdemaine that brought to mind Powell & Pressburger at their most fantastical and yet - somehow - never sacrificied the powerful sense of realism that had gone before.
