Great film and probably my fave performance by Kate Winslet. She is heart-breakingly good in this one (I also love the blue streaks in her hair). Also, the last interesting thing Jim Carrey's done. What happened to this guy? This film also raises some really fascinating questions about one's memories and how who we are is as a result of the good and bad memories and choices that we make in life.
Yea, I think Kate's work in this film is just about the best of the decade...it's one of the brilliant and emotionally stripped performances I have ever seen. I also think it's one of the most meaningfull as I can't tell you how many people I have talked to who have been influenced by her work here (and the film itself).Carrey is incredible here as well and it's tragic that this didn't redirect his career. His choices since have been regretable at best. What did you think of Gondry's follow up film J.D., The Science of Sleep? It took me a bit to warm up to it but I must say that I have a real fondness for it now...Thanks for the comments...
Beautiful images! I love the film too. I've not seen Science of Sleep yet but the DVD is getting close to the top of my viewing pile! One day I'll get there!
Thanks Colin, This was one of the easiest films I have ever captured images from as pretty much every frame is evocative and beautiful looking. These are some of my favorite moments...glad you liked them.Give Science of Sleep a look when you can...I was disappointed the first time I saw it but it really sticks with you...and of course Gael and Charlotte and incredible in it.Thanks again for the always appreciated comments...
I do love this film. It is probably Kate's best performance. She is truly wonderful here. Jim was as well. After such an incredible performance it's a shame that his career has pretty much gone sour. It is a meaningful and powerful film that everybody should see at least once.
I quite enjoyed THE SCIENCE OF SLEEP as it seemed to me to be Michel Gondry completely unfiltered, stylistically speaking, as evident from his collection of music videos. I really want to see this again but I do remember being quite impressed by it and am really anticipating BE KIND, REWIND as the trailers looked hilarious. After seeing this film, I'd love to see Gondry and Kaufman team up again and tackle a Philip K. Dick novel. Or maybe Kurt Vonnegut.
Thanks Keith, It's one of my favorites and it honestly means a lot to me.Thanks again JD, That word 'unfiltered' you used about Science is perfect. I think that is what through me off at first because it does feel so personal...but I am quite fond of the film now and have watched it a few times...I seriously wouldn't mind seeing Gael and Charlotte in every film that comes out. Be Kind Rewind never played around here but I am looking forward to catching up with it on DVD
Sorry...that should read, "threw me off". I am tired today.
Jeremy:Yeah, fortunately, I had already digested the DVD set of Gondry's music videos and that features him at his unfiltered best, I think, so I was ready for it with SCIENCE. I love the vids he's directed for the White Stripes and I wish he would do more with them. There were rumblings that he was going to do something for their last album but nothing has materialized.Back to SCIENCE, I agree that the two leads in it were excellent. Very well cast and they certainly seemed to tap right into Gondry's wacky worldview.
His videos for The White Stripes are so bad-ass. I really hope they do some more in the future...I also love the work with did with Bjork. One of his best videos is the clip for Kylie Minogue's Come Into My World which is on YouTube if you haven't seen it...the song itself is a typical dance number (no swipe on Minogue as I think she's great) but the video is out sight.
