I've never heard of this film before, but the Netflix plot summary (which has been known to be inaccurate) makes it sound a lot like Jacques Audiard's "The Beat That My Heart Skipped" which I absolutely loved. Might there be a connection betwixt the two?

I have yet to see the Audiard film but it is my understanding that he meant it as a reworking of this film. Thanks for the comment!
I can still remember being somewhat disturbed as a six or seven year-old boy when I caught part of this film on HBO in the morning before school. This was probably in the 7 or 8 o'clock hour, not the middle of night, where more risque fare is usually placed. Of course, the cable programming folks don't do that anymore! Showings like this probably prompted enough parental complaints to make the pay cable channels alter their practices. Needless to say, it was the first time of many that I saw Harvey Keitel naked!
Thanks Ned for the great memory. That's awesome. I caught the film for the first time via an old VHS copy that I found in the early 90s or so. I love the film and the DVD is great with some essential extras.
it's a really odd movie that works particularly well. i love jim brown's dreem and how he says "mutherfucking. freak."
I'd like to see this movie,especially because i've seen its french "remake" and this remake is very overrated in my country,i think..
