This is a fantastic film, but of course I expect nothing less of Pialat, who cuts to the core of fringe-dwelling people with a keen observational eye and a knack for exploring uncomfortable emotions. Sophie Marceau is especially amazing here, shifting from innocent naif to femme fatale, while Sandrine Bonnaire is simply electric in a smaller role as a charming young prostitute.

Totally agree and I love that you mentioned Sandrine, one of my favorite (often overlooked) actors that came out of this period.
I really love this film, too. It's funny. Pialat is one of these guys that's really revered in France that never has quite become a household name in The States. The French cinephiles consider him the most important French director to emerge after the Nouvelle Vague. I also really love his film Naked Childhood (L'enfance nue), but it's incredibly difficult to find, too.

If I ever come across a copy of Naked Childhood, I'll send it your way. I saw it once many years ago. It's one of those films that's I'm always trying to get my hands on again. That and the Renoir film noir, Night at the Crossroads (La Nuit du carrefour).
Naked Childhood is a good movie too, showing Pialat's sensibility in place from the beginning. Like most of his movies, it's been released on DVD by Masters of Cinema in the UK, who have done a great job with his oeuvre. If you guys are multi-region, you can easily track down that film.
