I missed this film at the theaters and just caught up with it recently. I was really floored by it and as someone who has spent a lot of time in Memphis, I can say this film really captures something special.
I also think it is one of the best acted films of the decade, and it's criminal that Manning wasn't nominated.
What can I say...this film really moved me and I haven't stopped thinking about it since I watched it recently.
For the record, I love black Snake Moan as well but I preferred this one...
I've never seen this movie for some reason. Not sure why. I need to rectify that though.
I got to see Hustle & Flow in theaters and have rented the DVD twice. I enjoyed the movie tremendously as well. I think it loses momentum as soon as DJ finished his demo tape, but you correct Jeremy that the performances, Memphis flavor and the little touches in this movie are perfect.
Instead of showing the bling associated with hip hop, I think this is the first movie to show how the music is actually created. For that reason, it is one of the decade's better films.
I don't know who is responsible for managing Terrence Howard or Taryn Manning, but neither of them really moved onto the A-list after this movie. I think Howard had a better character in Big Momma's House than in Iron Man.
as a lifelong hip-hop devotee, i can say this is one hip-hop movie that rings true. it's about the street and making something out of nothing...the hustle. compare this to the recent bio-fluff notorious and you see how much more can be done with so much less.
